Notorious Hacker Kingpin ‘Tank’ Is Finally Going to Prison
Vyacheslav Igorevich Penchukov, who operated under the hacker moniker ‘Tank’, was a leading figure in the prolific Zeus malware syndicate and had been on the FBI’s most‑wanted cyber list for more than a decade. After disappearing from a 2010 raid in Donetsk, he was finally arrested in Switzerland in 2022 and extradited to the United States. In a Lincoln, Nebraska federal court, Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced him to two concurrent nine‑year terms for conspiracy to participate in racketeering and for conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The judge also imposed a restitution order exceeding $73 million and a three‑year supervised release. The sentencing followed a plea agreement signed in February, which the government and Penchukov’s attorneys requested to be less severe. This case underscores the challenges U.S. law‑enforcement faces when prosecuting Eastern European cyber‑criminals lacking extradition treaties with the U.S.
